It is winter and therefore very important to have a few delicious hot alcoholic beverages at the ready for yourself, and anyone else who might come over. But especially for yourself! These are known as Hot Toddy’s. There are many definitions of Hot Toddy, my definition is a cocktail that is served hot. These three drinks are my favorites. One made with hot chocolate, one with hot tea and one with hot coffee. All are comforting and delicious on a cold winter day, night or whenever the mood strikes!
Hot chocolate and red wine
There are a whole bunch of delicious sounding recipes for this hot toddy. Mulling red wine in a sauce pan…melting chocolate chips with milk on the stove…whipping up some cream….ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I just want to have a comforting alcoholic drink that is easy to prepare after we put the kids to bed. Extra dishes and preparation time is not what I am in the mood for. Here’s my recipe:
- 2 packets Swiss Miss, prepared as package indicates
- 1/2 cup red wine, pour into the large mug of hot chocolate
If you want to heat the wine prior to combining, remember you will lose some of the alcohol content. This is a soothing and delicious treat, when the kids are having their hot cocoa with marsh mallows and you can have your own special hot chocolate.
Coffee with Bailey’s and Kahlua
This is my go to drink nearing the end of the day. We have not had dinner yet, the kids are rambunctious and I would like a mini-break. The coffee is a nice pick-me-up to give back a little energy to get the kids fed, played with and off to bed. The Bailey’s and kahlua are a great combination and make the evening relaxing and soothing at the same time. We are lucky enough to have kahlua that is made by a friend of ours, so don’t go looking for George’s Kahlua in the store, you won’t find it!
- A cup of coffee
- 1 ounce kahlua
- 1 ounce Bailey’s Irish Creme-Orginal recipe
Remember these are not hard and fast measurements. If you feel like more or less, it’s your drink and please make it taste how you would like.
HOt Tea with Rum Chata
This one is a new one for me this year. I received a delicious tea from my father in-law as part of a Christmas present and truly enjoyed the taste of this Milwaukee made tea. I love being able to drink locally and this Rishi Blueberry Hibiscus Tea is so tasty. Mixed with the Rum Chata it tastes like a fruit pie in a mug.
- Heat 5 ounces of water, brew tea for at least 5 minutes
- Add 2 ounces of Rum Chata
Smooth, delicious and comforting. The Blueberry Hibiscus Tea is fruity and delicious on it’s own and the Rum Chata puts it over the top.
All three of these hot toddy’s are perfect in their own right. I decide on the mixture that I’m most in the mood for and what I have available at home. These can be dressed up for guests, or just poured into your favorite mug and enjoyed while binge watching Netflix once the kids are tucked away.
This is a bit of a deviation from my typical Tasty Tuesday posts, I hope you enjoyed this exception. We will return next week for allergen free meals that I prepare with my son in mind, but this week is all about the adults being able to relax.
